ALBANY COUNTY LEGISLATURE VOTES DOWN EFFORTS TO BOOST TRANSPARENCY
Party-Line Vote Against Republican Proposals to Shed More Light on County Spending, Programs and Services
ALBANY, NY – Democrats in the Albany County Legislature tonight voted down a proposal to shed more light on how taxpayer money is spent and how key issues are decided.
Resolution 92-A would have required that Legislative agendas be made public (to members and the public) at least 48 hours in advance of meetings when votes on the resolutions and laws are taken.
“The Albany County legislature has missed an opportunity to create a more thorough and open process for researching and debating bills,” said Legislator Mark Grimm (R-Guilderland), the ranking member on the Finance committee. “We’ve actually received County legislative proposals a little more than an hour before we were asked to vote on them. That’s not the best way to ensure a healthy level of scrutiny.”
Last November, Legislative amendments totaling $3 million dollars to the County Budget were delivered to the Republican and Conservative Conference just over an hour before those amendments were put to a vote during the Finance Committee budget meeting.
“My common-sense proposal would benefit every County citizen and business regarding our nearly $850 million budget.” concluded Grimm.
