“PURPLE HEART COUNTY” RESOLUTION PASSED BY ALBANY COUNTY LEGISLATURE
Measure Introduced by Conservative Legislator Chris Smith
Shows Support for Veterans in the Capital District

ALBANY, NY – The Albany County Legislature this week passed a resolution designating Albany a “Purple Heart County.” The measure, introduced last month by County Legislator Chris Smith (C-R, East Berne), gives thanks and gratitude to veterans in the Capital District.
“Being in the United States Army taught me the meaning of service and sacrifice. Though we can never truly repay the brave individuals who were injured or lost their lives in the line of duty, I am hopeful we can show them our gratitude by naming Albany a ‘Purple Heart County.’ It’s a great day to join numerous communities across the state in honoring and commending these brave veterans for their service. I thank my colleagues in the County Legislature for working quickly to adopt my resolution, and I look forward to working with the County Executive and all of my colleagues in implementing this important designation,” said County Legislator Smith.
The Purple Heart, awarded to service members killed or wounded in action, is the oldest active military award in the United States. Numerous localities in New York State have designated themselves “Purple Heart Entities” to honor the courageous recipients of the medal. These counties, towns, villages and other communities are part of what is known as the “Purple Heart Trail,” which stretches across the entire country.
The resolution was passed at the May monthly meeting of the Albany County Legislature with the full support of the Republican and Conservative Conference. Once fully adopted, the designation will be a show of support and appreciation for Purple Heart recipients in our County – through efforts such as signage and other visual reminders of the sacrifice made by these brave individuals.
