Under the new federal administration, the Department of Justice and other authorities have made clear there will be zero tolerance for any so-called “Sanctuary” jurisdictions harboring criminal illegal migrants in our country. Non-compliance with this directive could result in loss of federal funding as well as prosecution of officials impeding deportation efforts.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan should rescind her 2017 Executive Order designating Albany a “Sanctuary City” based on this directive. She should also direct the Albany Police Department to enter into an agreement with federal authorities allowing for cooperation with ICE and DHS. 

 

For far too long, cities like Albany have harbored murderers, rapists and other violent criminals illegally in our country. New York State taxpayers have had to foot the bill for more than $1.5 billion on the migrant crisis to date, with billions more allocated next year. This is unsustainable policy in terms of public safety and fiscal responsibility.

It’s time for Mayor Sheehan and other pro-Sanctuary advocates to end the nonsense and return to a system of governance that puts the rule of law, the Constitution and every law-abiding, tax-paying citizen first again.
