ALBANY COUNTY LAWMAKERS APPROVE MEASURE TO EXPEDITE TAX CORRECTIONS & INCREASE GOV’T EFFICIENCY
Resolution Will Save County Resources and Accelerate Corrections to County Property Tax Errors, Refunds, and Credits
ALBANY, NY – The Albany County Legislature this month unanimously passed Resolution No. 2 for 2025, a measure which will expedite corrections to County Property Tax Errors, Refunds and Credits not exceeding $2,500. The previous threshold of $1000 forced the County Real Property Tax Service Agency to seek Legislative approval on several low corrections, thereby stalling much-needed tax relief for property owners and fiscal accounting in Albany County.
“As elected officials, we often hear from our constituents about government inefficiency and ways we can reduce our bloated bureaucracy. The County’s previous way of correcting property tax bills and delivering refunds or credits for homeowners was a prime example of this over-regulatory environment. Though this resolution may seem like a small step towards correcting that problem, it will undoubtedly save County time and resources – and it will ease the delivery of much-needed tax relief to countless petitioners before our Tax Service Agency. My colleagues and I are proud to support this common-sense bipartisan measure, and we will continue to push for ways to increase government efficiency throughout the New Year,” said Deputy Minority Leader Paul Burgdorf.
At a November 2024 meeting of the Legislature’s Audit & Finance Committee, Legislator Burgdorf first questioned the $1000 threshold for County Property Tax Errors, Refunds and Credits. The inquiry was made on the basis that the County Property Tax Service Agency and County Legislature’s collective time and resources were not well-spent on minuscule tax corrections.
In 2024, the Legislature considered numerous resolutions concerning County Property Tax corrections between $1000-$2500. The resolution (attached), introduced by the County Legislative Chair and passed unanimously by the Legislature on January 13, will save considerable time and resources the County could spend on more substantive issues.
